Lead-acid batteries are composed of a Lead-dioxide cathode, a sponge metallic Lead anode and a Sulphuric acid solution electrolyte. This heavy metal element makes them toxic and improper disposal can be hazardous to the environment.They remain the technology of choice for automotive SLI (Starting, Lighting and Ignition) applications because they are robust, tolerant to abuse, tried and tested and because of their low cost.

For higher power applications with intermittent loads however, Lead acid batteries are generally too big and heavy and they suffer from a shorter cycle life and typical usable power down to only 60% Depth of Discharge (DOD). Despite these shortcomings Lead acid batteries are still being specified for PowerNet applications (36 Volts 2 kWh capacity) because of the cost, but this is probably the limit of their applicability and NiMH and Li-Ion batteries are making inroads into this market. For higher voltages and cyclic loads other technologies are being explored.

The characteristics of the lead-acid battery:
1. Safety performance is good
No electrolyte leakage under normal use, no cell expansion and rupture.

2.Discharge of good performance
Discharge voltage is stable, flat discharge plateau.

3.Good resistance to high-current
The battery is fully charged state 2ca discharge five minutes or five seconds, 10ca discharge, non-conductive part of the fuse.

4.Charging and good resistance
25 ℃, the battery is fully charged state of 0.1ca charge for 48 hours, no leakage, no cell expansion and rupture.

5.Good resistance to over-discharge
25 ℃, the battery is fully charged state of resistance to be discharged three weeks (equivalent to the requirements of the battery discharge 1Ca resistance).

6. Good impact resistance
The battery is fully charged state, the natural drop from 20cm height to 1cm thick hardwood board 3 times without leakage.

7.Good resistance to vibration performance
The battery is fully charged state of a completely fixed to 4mm amplitude, 16.7Hz frequency of no leakage, no cell expansion and rupture.

Battery acid, or electrolyte, is a solution of sulfuric acid and water that can destroy clothing and burn the skin. Use extreme caution when handling electrolyte and keep an acid neutralizing solution - such as baking soda or household ammonia mixed with water - readily available. When handling batteries:

1.Always wear proper eye, face and hand protection,If the electrolyte is splashed into an eye, immediately force the eye open and flood it with clean, cool water for at least 15 minutes. 2.Keep all sparks, flames and cigarettes away from the battery.
3.Never try to open a battery with non-removable vents.
4.Keep removable vents tight and level except when servicing electrolyte.
5.Make sure work area is well ventilated.
6.Never lean over battery while boosting, testing or charging.
7.Exercise caution when working with metallic tools or conductors to prevent short
8.To prepare electrolyte of a specific gravity, always pour the concentrated acid slowly into the water; DO NOT pour water into the acid. Always stir the water while adding small amounts of acid.
